Club History

The Michigan Tech Women's Hockey Club was formed in 1993 to give women an opportunity to play more hockey than the intramural hockey season provided, as well as providing an opportunity to improve skills and play at a higher level. MTU joined the University of Minnesota and the University of Wisconsin as schools in the midwest offering women's hockey as a club sport. The MTU club has strengthened its program by drawing from a growing pool of girls and women who have experience playing organized hockey.

In February of 1996, the club had two teams participate in an invitational tournament in L'Anse, Michigan. The "A" team finished second out of six teams. The 1997-98 season marked the first time the team traveled outside of the area when they traveled to Madison, Wisconsin for three games against the University of Wisconsin club teams. During the 1998-99 season, the team played club teams from the University of Minnesota (Twin Cities) and Lake Superior State University, earning victories in each meeting.

The team made another step forward in April of 1999 as they traveled to Washington D.C. to compete with the top women's senior 'B' teams in the country at the USA Hockey National Championship Tournament. The Huskies finished the tournament with a respectable 2-2 record. The Huskies made their second appearance at the National Tournament in April of 2002, held in Anchorage, Alaska.

The long-term goal for the Club is to join the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA). Some benefits of the ACHA are an 8-team National Championship Tournament, regional rankings throughout the season, USA Hockey membership and benefits, and membership for team coaches in the American Hockey Coaches Association.
